Chapter 15

Suddenly, I’m bolt upright in bed and beads of cold sweat paste my snow-white hair to my temples. My hands are shaking. My heart is racing. Steadying my finger to press the speed dial for Secret Alchemist seems a monumental task. I hit speaker and fall back against my pillow.

Mr. Willoughby answers on the first ring, and I plow ahead. “Silas, I had an absolute bonkers dream just now. I need to know what it means.”

“Good afternoon, Mizithra. I trust you are well?” Kudos to his ability to avoid answering the question and somehow simultaneously teach me a lesson.

“I don’t have time for manners. It was a dream about my mother. And a powerful magical — maybe alchemical — object.”

His demeanor changes in an instant. “Are you quite certain it was a dream? It may have been a communication with your mother’s spirit. Has Coraline Moon previously spoken to you in this manner?”

It’s not often I find myself at a loss for words. The thought that naptime’s strange vision could be more than the wishful thinking of a girl orphaned at eleven nearly stops my heart. “Not like this. This time, I felt her in her physical form. She hugged me. Then she gave me the strangest message.”

Silas harrumphs, and a long, slow exhale swallows up nearly a minute before he replies.

“We are learning more about your abilities with each passing day. What you have described could be astral travel. An out-of-body experience. Based on my interpretations of the arcane and my knowledge of the spirit world, I believe this to have been a visitation. Not merely a phantasm of dreamland. Do you recall the message?”

“I’ll never forget it as long as I live.” The hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

My mentor’s tone is calm but stern. “Tell me. You must repeat it verbatim. Each syllable spoken by the energies on the other side of the veil carries an import our minds can scarcely comprehend. Take a deep breath, sink into the memory, and recite exactly what Coraline said to you.”

Disappearing into the precious memory of my mother’s touch is easy. I never want to leave this place. As her arms loosen and her hands slide downward, she grips my fingers in hers. Gentle dark eyes seem to stare through mine — to my soul. Her beautiful British voice fills my head.

“My sweet girl, I have learned of a powerful relic. On this side of the veil, it is known as the Oracle of Return. Find it. Speak my name into its ear. I shall return to you. Whole. Unblemished. As though I never left.”

A hollow, empty silence hangs over the phone line. Eventually, I fear the call may have been disconnected.

“Silas? Are you there?” A sharp inhale is his only response.

“What does it mean?” My heart feels as though it could beat out of my chest.

“You are certain those were her exact words. The Oracle of Return?”

“Yes. I’m one thousand percent sure. I’m using my psychic recall.
